When I heard the news that Amazon was purchasing Twitch.tv it really made me wonder what they were up to. Just recently, they seem to be on a hiring spree for so many positions ranging from programmers to artists for its gaming studio. On Gamasutra alone it has posted 25 available jobs.
It looks like it is primarily focused on making PC games at the moment. With its recent purchase of Twitch.tv though, I can only imagine that they want to create a lot of eSports types of games as well. I do wonder if the company’s long-term strategy is to only enter the industry as a publisher and developer. With that kind of investment, you would think they are trying to go further such as making its own console as an example.
I wonder if it is too far-fetched to speculate that Amazon wants to go after companies like Steam as opposed to a Nintendo as an example. They seem to have the distribution network and resources to setup such an idea. Like they say too, money can buy experience when it comes to business. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see how they grow without really having the experience but having the capital.
